At AFKA Cymru we know how important it is for foster carers to be well prepared. They need to understand their crucial role in children’s lives and as part of the wider team around the child, the challenges and unique rewards that fostering brings, and the support they will have along the way.
Following extensive consultation with foster carers and fostering teams, AFKA Cymru has developed a creative new approach to preparing foster carers in Wales.
Our training and comprehensive interactive workbook is based on up-to-date research and evidence-based approaches, including PACE and Secure Base, which place the child firmly at the centre and provides applicants with a range of “tools” they can draw on. The course also looks at the impact of ACEs and has a focus on foster carer wellbeing to ensure the foster carers can be the best they can be.
Each course is delivered by Trainer Consultants with experience of preparing, assessing and supporting foster carers.

“Training was full of energy and enthusiastic which made you feel really engaged in the theory. Covered everything and more. I came to this training thinking this might change my mind about the fostering journey but within the first half of the course it confirmed why I want to continue this journey.”

“There was a level of anxiety and nerves on the build up to attending this training, as I’m sure there is for all attendants. The Trainers were incredibly welcoming on Day One, and they immediately put you at ease, which goes a huge way to settling those initial nerves which in turn gives you the capacity to be able to contribute and absorb some challenging or difficult topics. An absolutely fantastic 3 days – a lot to squeeze in in such a short space of time, but so valuable and really acts as a springboard into adoption. It has only reaffirmed my desire to go down this path and added to my excitement for the future. Big thank you to all the Trainers.”
