The Secure Base ModelÓ, developed by Gillian Schofield and Mary Beeks, is an internationally recognised model for caring for children who have experienced abuse and trauma. Caring for these children poses many challenges and dilemmas to the parenting task. This workshop looks to unlock the world of the child and enable carers to understand their child’s feelings and their underlying behaviours to inform the parenting task. Promoting an emotional connection between children and their carers and providing practical parenting techniques are all considered within this workshop. It aims to assist families navigate the long term complexities of caring for looked after children who have experienced abuse and trauma.

By the end of this course participants will be better able to:

  • Have a Clear understanding of the impact of abuse and trauma on a child
  • Become familiar with the Secure Base model of Parenting
  • Explore  skills and techniques of the Secure Base in Practice
  • Have developed skills and techniques in managing difficult behaviour
